Operation Vengeance

In April, 1943, US Intelligence intercepted a coded message saying where Fleet Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto would be everyday, for a week. So on April 18,1943 a small squadron of 16 P-38G fighters from the 339th Fighter Sqdn took off and intercepted Yamamoto's flight. First Lt. Rex Barber engaged both G4M Betty bombers, shooting down the Betty that happened to be carrying Yamamoto himself. At 8am in the morning, Yamamoto's Betty crashed into the jungle of Bougainville in the Northern Solomon Islands.
