Chez Renee, Santa Fe, NM

Chez Renee Restaurant sign, Santa Fe, New Mexico. Through the late 1950s and the 1960s, and into the early 1970s, Chez Renee, with its red booths, was known as one of Santa Fe’s best restaurants. It served Continental cuisine along with American favorites like steaks and put together salads at table side. A filet mignon sold for $6. Among the celebrities who ate at Chez Renee were John Wayne and Johnny Cash, who preferred to eat in the kitchen so as not to draw attention from other diners. Chez Renee closed in 1973 and leased its building for a seafood restaurant, Captain’s Table. It folded by 1976, and remains abandoned to this day.
