Every year I used to write a very structured entry in my journal on New Year's Day or the day after, in which I'd put down what the past year was a year "of" -- "...of good friends and bad weather, of promises kept..." etc. etc. -- and what I hoped for the next. Never specific resolutions or promises, just general hopes and expectations. I would detail what I had done on New Year's Eve, and what I wore. Then I would sign it. The idea being that I could go back and remember these little details of clothing and place and watch my signature change. You're right. The new year, if good for little else but counting the years, is one time that we can look at ourselves in larger chunks than just the day-to-day poking, prodding and worrying that we put our souls through.

I still take my journal with me everywhere, but I haven't done this entry in several years even though I always intend to. Is the 6th too late?

Photo no.1 in the comments is stunning. Normally I kind of shrug at the "here's me with my camera" shot, but here, it's not only thematically appropriate, but the square-crop and colour scheme leave you looking graceful as a breeze-blown curtain. Fantastic.

Anyway, happy new year to ya. Own it.
