1948 Me and Sister
Summer 1948.
I own this photo, the photographer was my father Percy Hedges. I am the boy, then aged 5. The girl is one of my sisters, then aged 3. I'm fairly certain this was taken in Brighton where we invariably took our holidays, mostly because one of my aunts lived there and it was free board.
Our clothes are very typical of Britain in the 1940s. Girls always wore skirts, never trousers. I wore short trousers exclusively (which I did up to the age of 13½).
And here's a shocker that strongly reflects the changes in the World over the last 60 years. The doll in my sister's arm is what was called then a "gollywog" and it was named by my parents (who knew no better) Nigger Boy. I also had one and they'd called that Gollywog
