Big lens and big crop! Hummingbirds are so tiny (9cms or 3 inches), that it is hard to see their detail without scopes or binoculars. Even with a big 600mm lens and teleconverter, I had to be very close to get a shot like this one. Notice how the throat patch has a spectrum of colour, that is pure brilliant scarlet when in direct light. This is how males attract their mates. I could sense his stress, the need to feed constantly, and his need to mate.
