1985 lawnmower... the beginning
In September of 2003 Hurricane Isabel wiped out most of the homes in my section of Poquoson, VA. We were lucky in that we ONLY lost everything in the garage and under the house. Insurance never covers the price of all losses.
The following Spring I learned about Freecycle and joined the nearest group in Yorktown. I posted a want for a used mower (we have an acre of land) and someone replied offering us their 1985 Toro. When I sent my husband to go get it, he realized that it was the home of a colleague of his whose cubicle was literally just a few steps away at work. Without Freecycle, we would have never been able to make the connection.
After a month or so of participating in FreecycleYorktown, the moderator of the Yorktown group ('Nita) and I became good friends (I'd have never met her either if it hadn't been for FC!) and she encouraged me to start a group for my small town in Poquoson. On May 26, 2004 FreecyclePoquoson joined the network. I've been running the group ever since.
