Ruine Ehrenfels from Bingen
Ruine Ehrenfels, seen from Bingen, near my hotel. This is the first castle that you see on the Rhine, if you take the boat north from Mainz. It is at the point where the Rhine River narrows. The castle was built about 1211, and was used by the Bishops of Mainz to levy tolls on Rhine traffic. It was destroyed by the French army in 1689. Km 530.
