Constantine II was still King of Greece in June 1967. A group of army officers had conducted a coup in April. The King led a countercoup in December 1967. It failed, and he was forced to leave the country. The "colonels" abolished the monarchy. They were replaced by an elected government in 1974, but a referendum decided against restoration of the monarchy. The palace is now the residence of the President of Greece.
