Central African Buffalos at Rigueik Zakouma National Park in Chad

In 1986 there were only around 220 Central African buffalos Syncerus caffer aequinoctialis left in Zakouma National Park now there are thought to be over 12,000 making this one of the most important populations of this African buffalo subspecies.

In appearance Central African buffalos appear to be transitional between the familiar black Cape buffalos of Eastern and Southern Africa and the smaller red brown forest buffalos of Central and West African rainforest. Within the same herd you will find animals varying in colour from light brown to almost black and with a variety of different horn shapes.
