Lunch accessories organized #1

Newer Older

This is my obsessive way of keeping my son's bento lunch accessories organized and within reach when I'm packing lunch in the morning. The plastic boxes on the microwave (from a Japanese dollar store) hold less-used things, while the wooden under-cabinet shelf with drawers holds the most frequently used accessories. The wall shelf with drawers is from Ikea's FÖRHÖJA line -- the wood drawers hold more than the glass drawer option (which were pointed in the back and didn't fully utilize available space). Big shout out to Flikr user yurippe_masuda for the shelf idea. Blog entry here.

(EDIT: I'm running a lunch gear organization event and contest; submit your ingenious organization methods by March 14, 2008 to win a copy of the upcoming bento book Face Food. Full details are here.)

Heh, I have the same plastic boxes on your microwave (also from a Japanese dollar store and hold pretty much the same items as yours.

Ahhh, you've taken Yurippe's idea ... I liked hers and you've done a nice job as well. I'm jealous now.

I feel so inadequate by comparison. My bento accessories are just stuck in an overflowing plastic bin in the cupboard over the microwave.

artal> Initially that's all I used, and the plastic boxes worked just fine -- until Daiso opened up near my house! Then the accessories threatened to take over my kitchen, and I was quickly losing counter space. Grrr...

Kate> Yup, that's why I credited her in the photo description.

jhitchin> That was me last year! First they took over the back of a drawer, then part of a cupboard, then boxes on the microwave... It's a creeping illness -- help!

Oh I don't mean "taken" as anything other than inspiration! I remember her bento kitchen, too ... that's all. I like your idea of the wooden inserts instead of glass. No dead space. I think I'm off to go get that set up today. Then I'll be crediting *you* !

I am so jealous! I still haven't organised anything. I really should cos it takes up too much time in the mornings when I'm hunting for things ;>
I'd be worse if I had access to a Japanese shop, but I can't find any near me, so it's all online with horrific postage (from overseas) :-\

Kate> Ah, cool. I do try to be fair about giving credit where it's due.

Biggie, I know exactly what you mean! I live near a Marukai, Mitsuwa, Little Tokyo, and Koreatown. I actually have to tell myself enough with the accessories.

This is amazing. On Aug 16 we're releasing our second Get Organized week for fall, and it's all about kids' rooms and back to school organization. We'd love to have you join and add your rooms to our www.flickr.com/groups/403189@N20/ group and inspire our readers!

    @ HGTV.com Decorating:
Sounds interesting, but your group rules say that if I join and submit a photo, I give up all rights to the photo (including attribution, etc.) and grant all rights to HGTV.com. I'm not comfortable with that -- am I missing something obvious? If you'd like to use the photo for something specific, please let me know and we can discuss it on a case by case basis. Thanks for your kind comment, though!

@ HGTV.com Decorating: Thanks for the Flickr mail addressing my concerns; I've added this and another lunch accessory organization photo to your pool.

I would paint the wooden boxes to match your kitchen. :3 Great way to organize the bento gear.
