GEISHA IN SILHOUETTE WRITING A LETTER -- An Unusual Image from OLD JAPAN

Nothing but the available lamp light was used to create this rare interior scene of two Geisha (or Maiko) conferring together over a letter being written by the girl on the right.

Perhaps she is answering a love letter from a patron, and needs help from her "sister" on what to say in reply.

The intimacy of the subject combined with the raw, unassisted photography makes for one of the more unique photos I've seen from this period.

Ca.1900-10 Gelatin silver print. Photographer unknown.
