T. ENAMI in NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MAGAZINE -- July 1921

"SIXTEEN PAGES OF JAPANESE SCENES IN FULL COLOR"

Only Japan got the rare color treatment in this issue. Four of the sixteen full-page color plates were by T. Enami. About four B&W in-text images are his as well. The rest are credited to a variety of other contributing photographers.

Sorry, but I'm just posting the cover of this one. It's the first issue known to have used T. ENAMI photographs to illustrate an article about Japan, this one written by Walter Weston.

I'm posting five sample Enami photos from among the many that appeared in several issues of this yellow-bordered bastion of great photography. It is part of the HALFTONE Set in my PROCESSES & FORMATS COLLECTION

I have mentioned here and there that T. ENAMI --- who was born during the Edo-Bakumatsu era when true Samurai still roamed the land, all men wore top-knots, and the Last Shogun still had a grip on power --- went on to become one of that rarefied group of world photographers who can claim to be an alumni of National Geographic Magazine.

In Enami's case, his photographs graced the pages of at least four issues. I will post a few pages as examples of what the photo-editors of that time liked.

Keep in mind that layout and printing technology was not at the level it is today, and the crops and page arrangements are pretty straightforward. Things like full-page bleeds, photo-in-photo inserts, overlaps, reverse text in images, and other tricky means of color layout were still down the road.
