THREE PIOUS PILGRIMS AND A PRIEST in T. ENAMI'S YOKOHAMA STUDIO --- Fashions of Faith in OLD JAPAN

Although this ca.1892-96 hand-colored albumen photograph is obviously a posed studio shot, I think the subjects are real. With shrines and temples at every turn, Enami probably arranged something with the local priest in exchange for a small donation to the pilgrims, or some remuneration to the temple.

 

The pilgrim on the right is also wearing glasses.

 

The background with the tree is one of many Enami props, and even this one underwent changes, with parts of the tree and other objects (hidden behind the pilgrims, here) getting repainted, embellished, or cleaned up as the years went by.
