THE KUMAMOTO KING OF THE DAIKON -- OR, This Radish Probably Weighs as Much as He Does !
DAIKON -- I HATE IT. For 36 years the Japanese have been this White Radish in my soup, and for 35 years I've been taking it back out.
In southern Japan, "Daikon Ashi" (legs like a daikon) was an expression that could be GOOD or BAD depending on the particular shape of the Daikon and the legs of the particular girl you were comparing them to (That is to say, Daikon could be fat like this, or come in long, white, slender varieties).
It is said that Mothers in rural Japan would tell their sons to get a girl with [FAT] "Daikon Ashi" because girls like that are hardy and fertile, and will give you a bunch of kids. Meanwhile, all of the rural country boys were thinking ".....Yeah, right...I hope I get a girl with [SLENDER] "Daikon Ashi.....like all the Geisha Girls have !.....".
