8 1/2 men ? Yup. The guy on the very left moved his head around just a bit during the relatively slow exposure. His head is transparent --- through his chin and mouth --- against the large white stripe, but his body is solid against the lower red stripe.
In Japanese ghost lore, it is usually the BOTTOM half that fades out, with the head being solid. Leave it to the the Sumo guys to come up with a new take on the old "Shinrei Shashin", or "Ghost Photo".
HEY, HOW COME THESE GUYS AREN'T FAT, AND NOT WEARING SUMO DIAPERS ?
Diapers ??? Oh....the "diapers" or "loin-cloths" that Sumo wear are called FUNDOSHI. They only wear them while in the ring. The photo above shows them with their ceremonial garb.
The pro Sumo Wrestlers in the above Meiji-era stereoview are pretty buff. So, where's all of the flab these guys are supposed to have ? Don't worry...
THERE WERE FAT WRESTLERS, TOO !
That's right. In spite of the rather buff-looking guys seen above, there were also plenty of tub-o-lard, heavy-drop, beer-bellied, beached-whale, gasping-for-breath, human-hippopotamus types of Sumo wrestlers, right along with these guys.
On eBay and elsewhere, you will find plenty of old, classic photos of wheezing, chubby, obese, human-gumdrops, and you can post as many as you want right here on flickr !
However, Enami was so kind as to occasionally diss those Type-Two-Diabetes-waiting-to-happen Sons of Flubber from the classic heavy-weight divisions, and instead give us the equally-professional Sumo wrestlers of a fitter build found scattered in professional "stables" throughout Japan.
