Before the Fall

Illicit evidence of promiscuous summer,

spills curling grass reminders upon flaking stone.

Like Alice, I tumble headlong,

stumble onto mysterious roads.

Lush velvet wraps the regal forks

of the bay laurel's horns.

Scattered runes of fallen buckeyes predict

emerging ferns, coming lupine, secret trillium blooms.

An untouched meadow bursts with jays,

seductive light, falling cottonwood gold.
