Grandma in Michigan
Before air conditioning, mid-westerners headed north to the Great Lakes for vacations to escape the heat and humidity. Grandma’s family always stayed from June to September in a cottage close to Lake Michigan.
I think we all lived for the 500 mile drive from Springfield, IL to Grandma’s and the sand, waves and pine trees. Bingo once a week at the nearby hotel was the main evening entertainment. In 1952, I won $7 and spent it on the Hopalong Cassidy Brownie camera I had my eye on.
Grandma did not like to have her picture taken. She said, “ I’ll break the camera! No one ever called me pretty….handsome, maybe, but not pretty.” Alas, every time I round a corner in a museum to confront a Gilbert Stuart portrait of George Washington, I do a double take thinking it is Grandma.
