Kairouan

The Great Mosque in Kairouan, founded originally in the late 7th century, is the most important mosque in Tunisia and is regarded as the fourth holiest Islamic site, after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. As the 'Rough Guide to Tunisia' states, 'it is hard not to be impressed by such a powerful and beautiful expression of faith'. This photograph shows part of the main courtyard of the mosque, with the main prayer hall.
