The lovely town of Flores, the capital of Peten, is built on an island linked by a 500 metre-long causeway to the mainland. Once occupied by the Maya and known as Noh Peten, it was the last of their city states to be conquered by the Spanish, in 1697. It is said to be the second oldest continuously inhabited settlement in the Americas (after Cholula in Mexico). This photograph is of a typical street in the town, with its cobbles and colourfully painted houses.
