Giza 30

The smallest of the three Giza main pyramids is that of Mycerinus/Menkaure, who succeeded Chephren/Kafre as ruler of Egypt. As the Rough Guide to Egypt says, 'it speaks of waning power and commitment'. Its lower half was cased in red granite from Aswan, traces of which can still be seen. The great gash in one of its faces is the result of a futile attempt by a 12th century sultan to demolish the pyramid (he gave up after eight months!).
