Under The Volcano – Getting Older, Looking Better By The Day
Chateau Tongariro is a New Zealand hotel and resort complex.
It is positioned just a short drive from Whakapapa skifield on the slopes of Mt Ruapehu, and is near the volcanic peaks of Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe, within the boundaries of Tongariro, New Zealand's oldest national park.
Now officially titled Bayview Chateau Tongariro, the building was completed in 1929 and, despite extensive refurbishment, still retains much of the style of the pre-Depression era. Renowned for its classical styling and grandeur, it is one of New Zealand's most famous buildings.
