Bombus pascuorum (Common All-Brown Bumblebee, Queen) on a Green Alkanet flower

Spring Watch, London

Green Alkanet (Pentaglottis sempervirens), sometimes called Evergreen Bugloss, appears in woods and hedgerows throughout the British Isles. It likes damp and shady places.

The leaves are rough and hairy. The bright blue, forget-me-not-like flower is made up of 5 blue petals joined at a white centre. The flowers are edible, but are mostly used as a decoration in drinks and salads.
