A slum on a hillside on the western periphery of Sao Paulo. The hills surrounding western Sao Paulo were previously covered with mass vegetation. The population in these periphery areas had its first surges in the 1970's from the northeastern states when Sao Paulo was the countries industrial hub, today that immigration flux has significantlly diminished but continues to grow exponentially as the Brazilian economy grows and provides them a higher income and credit availability that allows for bigger families.
