Retro-Fit

There is a growing trend in ABQ to recondition old, burnt-out, Route 66 signs along Central Ave, and give them new life. This is such a sign and I believe it is the first of its kind.

Don't know enough about '66 history in ABQ to know what this sign used to be :(

Ah thx. I did plug the coordinates into Google Earth and did see a building next to it, but had no idea.

How extremely odd! Here's a similar one from Kingman.

Did some research and place used to be "The Royal Inn" and was a frequent scene on the show COPS. Was at some point turned into El Sarape mexican restaurant. It closed and then the city razed the building to the ground.

The metal shell of the sign remained until a grassroots movement sprung up and retrofitted the husk and turned into something different for people to enjoy.

I have some wonderful shots of this sign from early summer that I haven't done anything with. I love it!! Thank you for digging up the history of it. Anybody know the artist?
