St Mary's Cathedral - Rangoon - 1908

Spark St, Rangoon.

The Cathedral of St Mary the Virgin, to give its full name, is the Roman Catholic cathedral in Rangoon. The driving forces behind the cathedral's construction were Bishop Bigandet and his successor Bishop Cardot, of the French missionary Societe des Missions Etrangeres. The original plans in the Byzantine style were drawn up by PWD architect Henry Hoyne-Fox; however, this design proved to be too expensive and Bishop Cardot enlisted the help of Father Janzen to pursuade Dr Jos Cuypers, the Dutch architect responsible for the National Musuem in Amsterdam, to come up with an alternative plan. Constructed from red brick in the Gothic Revival style, it is located adjacent to the leading Catholic boys' school St Paul's High School - see my photo at , and it is the largest Christian church building in Burma. Although construction was completed 1908, the cathedral was formally consecrated by Bishop Carot on 8 December 1910.
