• Remote with Mic.
  • Shure Sound Isolating Earphone.
  • This is not as easy as it looks. The wires inside the Apple cable are coated. Keeping it strong is also challenging.
  • iPhone 4 32GB Black with Black Bumper.
  • This part of wire is reinforced since the Shure cable is very fragile.

DIY: Shure Sound Isolating Earphone + iPhone 4 Earphone

Newer Older

The earphones included with iPhone 4 is nice because of its microphone and controller. However, the sound quality is poor. It's just not good enough for listening music.

I happend have Shure Sound Isolating Earphone with bad wires. So I decided to put them together.

Notice that the cable length is extended unlike other modifications that just swap the units. This is because the proper way for wearing the Shure earphones is to wrap the earphone cord over the top and down the back of the ear.

With this DIY, I just saved hundreds of dollars :-)

You know there are adapters for that. From Griffin :))

  4. Yutaka Tsutano 45 months ago | reply

Yes, I have a similar adapter from Shure. Problem with those is that they typically adds bulkiness (longer cable length, bigger switch) and sometimes lack the volume control buttons. And they are also rather expensive (mine costed $40!) if you look for the ones that's high quality.

I happened have a high-quality earphones with bad wires (Shure) and a low-quality earphones with good wires (Apple). So I just put them together. Excellent sound quality with functionality without bulkiness and cost :-)

To battle the lame Shure cables right around the ear, I bought a pair of

    Silicone Ear Guides from
    store.audeoworld.com/

Hopefully this $10 purchase will protect me from having to do a $175 repair on my SE530s which are starting to split at the ear but are out of warranty.

Awesome. I have a pair of Bose headphone that are tearing close to the ear. Wondering ... what did you use to secure the Apple cable and Shure cable? There's some electrical tape, I see, but what is wrapped around it?

  8. Yutaka Tsutano 44 months ago | reply

Soldered the leads together, wrap in heat shrink tube, then zip tied. Electrical tape was not used.

    How Much is it?

  11. Yutaka Tsutano 43 months ago | reply

Few hundred dollars (I don't remember exactly how much I paid).

Shure headphone's cable have very short lifetime of about a year. The one I used for this became unusable after a year. This project fixes the problem. It means I practically paid nothing for the project.

I have a pair of shure E2Cs and they're starting to tear at the bend (where you wrap it over your ear). I want to just cut that section, reattach and then heat shrink like you did. Was it difficult reattaching/soldering the two new ends together? Ie. hard to match up the ends? how did you go about matching up the correct wires--or do you just attach them together in a bunch (as one)?

Does this function as a microphone for the phone as well or does it only work as earphones (i.e. no phone microphone)

  15. Yutaka Tsutano 25 months ago | reply

I can make a phone call with this earphone. It has a microphone and buttons for play/forward/volume, etc. The only difference between the Apple earphone is the improved sound quality.
