DC street lamp - single light top - Washington DC - 2012

Example of the top of a D.C. street lamp.

Street lamps in the city were first approved by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts in the 1920s. They were designed by people at Pepco. They come in two kinds: Single-light, and double-light. Modern street lighting (that "War of the Worlds" overhead mercury lamp) does exist, but the central core of the city uses them in a mix with these 1920s-style lamps.
