Family Compound, Navajo Nation, AZ 9-15
(1 in a multiple picture album)
When the American Expansion was done moving through the West, the Native Americans were given what the government didn't want. There they built their reservations.
There is great beauty here but little in the way of economic possibilities. Therefore, poverty is rampant. You see many of these compounds which house 2-4 generations of families.
In the last twenty years or so, the Native Americans have started to make their land more prosperous with the building of casinos, motels, restaurants, etc. You will find them to be a gentle, and hospitable people, though a bit shy (or suspicious?).
