This is the result of our our summer landscaping project. It is an example of "foodscaping," in which vegetable gardening is integral to the landscape design. We wanted to have raised vegetable beds right off the the patio of our walkout rambler home. But the the northern exposure and the hill down to the pond below made that difficult. The new retaining wall makes this possible. It combines both decorative and practical elements, with space for both flowers and vegetables, creating an inviting patio surround space. I can share the design and more information if you interested.

Here are the materials used:

RETAINING WALL: Borgert 'Madera" blocks in color 'Minnesota River',

PERENNIALS: 'Autumn Delight' Sedum and 'Orange Perfection' Phlox.

THREE 4'X6' RAISED BEDS: constructed out of 2x10 treated (non-arsenic, USDA approved for agriculture) lumber with rough cedar trim.

COST: about $9000, including all above materials, installation of wall, removal of part of concrete patio, black dirt, sodding. (Don't calculate that on a per-tomato basis! :-) )
