Ol' Blue Eyes

A shot from my visit to the Birch Aquarium in San Diego a while back. This is a cuttlefish. They have a very large brain for their size and some species can grow to over 20 lbs. in weight. They are actually not fish at all but mollusks, more closely related to squid and octopi. They are very intelligent and can be fierce predators. Their internal shell, the cuttlebone, is widely used to provide parakeets with a good source of protein. Seems a rather ignoble end for such a fascinating and intelligent creature. A bit of noise in this shot, but at ISO 6400 I'm not going to complain.
