Circinnate Vernation in a Fiddlehead Fern
Ferns have a characteristic fiddlehead shape when they are young. This is called circinnate vernation, meaning that the leaf unfurls in a spiral pattern. Just about all ferns share this pattern, which is hereditary, but it can be seen in many other plant forms as well.
