Ingrid is Free!
Wednesday July 2 2008, Ingrid Betancourt, three U.S. military contractors and 11 other Colombian hostages were rescued by the Colombian military from rebels of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, FARC. Ingrid was kidnapped in 2002 as she campaigned for the Colombian presidency. FARC still holds hundreds of hostages in Colombia's dense jungles.
My husband is Colombian. This rescue has great significance for Colombians. It indicates a weakening of FARC, who are now viewed as a terrorist organization by most Colombians. The Marxist FARC was once tolerated, even supported by a great percentage of Colombians because they addressed the great economic inequality within Colombia. Most Colombians now feel that FARC has evolved into a mafia and is further dividing the country. We hope that this week's great victory will lead way to a united and peaceful Colombia.
