"Come, Sit, Tell Me About America..." (#1 of 2 - a set)
I envision Abraham Lincoln returning to life, visiting the modern United States and wondering how we are doing.
Thus, take a seat and have a chat with the 16th President who delivered the Emancipation Proclamation, which - in conjunction with the 13th Amendment to the Constitution - made slavery illegal in the United States.
Gutzon Borglum's statue of President Lincoln sits in front of the Old Essex County Courthouse in Newark, New Jersey.
Borglum (1867 - 1941) has an interesting story himself. He supervised much of the sculpting of Mt. Rushmore and his bust of Lincoln sits in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, D.C.
Borglum was a Nativist and had sympathy for the Confederacy. For example, his efforts led to creation of a high-relief frieze of Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, and 'Stonewall' Jackson shown leading a legion of artillery troop around Stone Mountain, Georgia.
There's more:
Borglum was also a lifelong member of the KKK - yes, the Ku Klux Klan!
Ironic?
(Check out photo #2 of this two-photo set, which completes the thought!)
