A Practical, Purposeful Urban Pattern

    Newer Older

This 16 ha (40 ac) layout pattern for a neighbourhood incorporates patterns by several urbanists and from historic cities or projects:
    a) short connected cul-de-sacs from Raymond Unwin and Stein
    b) Looped Local Roads from Alexander pattern #49)
    c) Streets and Paths, common green also from Alexander
    d) T Junctions (Alexander # 50)
    e) Network of Paths and Cars (Alexander # 52)
    f) Paths and Goals (Alexander #120)
    g) Central green from the Savannah plan
h)Accessible Green (Alexander #60) or small public squares #61
    i) Orthogonal shapes from Hippodamus and the Romans

    This configurration aims to:
    a) exclude cut-through traffic
    b) involve fewer street crossings
    c) enable easy, direct access on foot
    d) make the open space a crssroads
    e) reduce speeds via short stret lengths
    f) reduce the area of asphalt

It fuses the orthogonal open car grid with the filtered permeability of a pedestrian grid. It thus creates a Fused Grid (see Wiki article)
