Grass Lake Panorama
Looking southeast over Grass Lake, Shoreview, MN. Grass Lake is a large wetland / shallow lake complex with floating islands of peat (when there's enough water to float them!) held together by cattail and other roots. Part of the Snail Lake Regional park system.
Satellite view of Grass Lake from Google Maps:
shows rounded "islands" of peat which are about 3 feet thick and up to a half acre in size. Winds slowly push these islands around the lake, providing an ever-changing configuration of land and water. Currently there is not enough water in Grass Lake to float the islands. Nearly all of the water area shown in the satellite view is currently overgrown with marsh grasses.
