Manland Primary School 1968
The 4th year 'B' class.
Taken shortly after I had gone. Ernest Walton is Front row far left.
At most of the other schools the Home sent children to a smart uniform if requested. For Manland anything went, although at odd times we could look smart, but the school photo wasn't one of them.
We were quite relaxed at this school, when we did get a little out of hand, written lines, hits with the ruler, the plimsoll and finally the cane kept us in order.
This teacher never punished me, all that happend during this part of the final fourth years was to be sent to stand outside the headmasters office, due to a severe caning I had received the previous school year, it was a hands off approach until they could get rid of me once I had reaced 11. I never knew in this period Sept to December that I was not to be hit, or I could really have turned against some of the teachers.
The only way I did once get back at the teachers on an open day, when you could throw wet sponges at them for 3d, I only had 6d to spend that day, but it was was one of my best 6d's ever spent.
