Maverick's Surf Competion Wave Washes Away Spectators

    A small wave hits the jetty at Maverick's Surf competition. The rogue wave was several feet over this wall.

      Your shot made me think of the Sumatra tsunami. It could happen here. Many people have been pulled out to sea by rogue waves - at Land's End in San Francisco, in Monterey, Carmel, etc..... You were very luck the wave did not pull anyone out. It would have been very difficult to rescue them. I was in a boat watching the morning competition and it felt very dangerous going out there. A huge offshore break stretching south to HMB formed a barrier, requiring a long detour to get us to the sweet spot where we could watch. Crossing the swells just south of the break was plenty iffy, with the boat doing its share of surfing!

      wow, Lyrinda, thanks for sharing your experience. I didn't even consider that a rescue could be dangerous, but it makes sense now that you mention it. Yes, I agree we were very lucky no one was pulled out.
