Old Hocton Homestead, Dovedale, Moutere, Nelson
Wong Ah Poo Hoc Ting, also known as Appo Hocton jumped ship in Nelson in 1842 thereby becoming NZ's first Chinese immigrant.
He built up a successful business involving cartage, building and exporting - I have previously photographed some of his cottages in Washington and Hastings Sts, Nelson.
In 1876 he moved his family to Dovedale and eventually built seven houses for himself and his family - several of these houses remain. It is said these homes were constructed without nails - wooden pegs were used instead perhaps contributing to their longevity. Located on the Dovedale Road, Moutere, Nelson.
