Charleston, Broad Street
One half of a stereoscopic view. City Hall at NE corner of Meeting and Broad Streets, c. 1865.
Meeting Street, Charleston, SC. Photo taken by Union military photographer sometime after city's official surrender in February 1865. Since these were probably elm trees lining Broad Street at the time, a better estimate of the date of when this photo was taken might be late May 1865. The pall of the terrible war's end and the South's defeat had truly settle over this city. Seldom has Broad Street been this empty of commerce.
