Frankie and Beth observe Scaglia Rossa in the mountains above Piobbico, Le Marche
Better check the field notes... The pelagic (i.e. deep water, below the marine 'photic zone' penetrated by sunlight) scaglia sequence (Bianca + Rossa) is about 400 meters thick and straddles the K/T boundary in the Umbia/Marche Apennines. Distinct zones have been measured using micropaleontological observation of foraminifera. A common foram, Globotruncana, disappears at the K/T boundary. Perhaps Frankie and Beth are looking for Globotruncana. Scanned slide.
