The Elephant Trunk Nebula, IC1396
IC1396 is a HII region illuminated by a number of bright young stars.
Image taken in H-alpha (red) and r-band (yellow).
This image shows a dense region of the nebula (not showing the full Elephant's Trunk), with evidence for ongoing star formation and a significant amount of dust (black) and hydrogen (red). The Elephant Trunk (of which this image shows its base) is an example of a 'Pillar of Creation' where young stars form, like the famous example in the Eagle Nebula.
