According to historical records , the Shwedagon Pagoda has existed for more than 2,600 years, making it the oldest historical pagoda in Burma and the world.

 

"A golden mystery...a beautiful winking wonder" is what Rudyard Kipling called this Buddhist shrine topped with 5,448 diamonds and 2,317 rubies, sapphires, and other precious gems. Domed like a bell, the Buddhist shrine, or stupa, is literally covered w/ the yellow metal which weighs 9.75 tons of gold.
