detail of Statue of Freedom

In the Visitors' Center of the Capitol Building in Washington DC is a life size plaster cast of the Statue of Freedom which sits on top of the Capitol's dome. The original sculpture was created by Thomas Crawford and is 19 feet (6 metres) high.

The sculpture is also known as "Armed Liberty". In this image we see her left hand holds a laurel wreath (symbolising victory) and a shield decorated with 13 stars and 13 stripes.
