I lived in Sydney for over a year and would pass this spot on my way from work. It’s a bustling tourist hub – a major ferry stop which is surrounded by buildings such as the Modern Art Gallery, restaurants and the stepping stone to the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. Dotted amongst all of this, are the buskers. 'A Portrait of a Stranger' gave me the perfect excuse to meet a member of one of the groups that entertain the tourists.
Norm is part of ‘Spirit of the Land’ Didgeridoo show, they perform at Circular Quay in Sydney. He’s originally from Townsville and is a Torres Strait Aboriginal who has been in Sydney for nearly ten years.
If you visit this spot in Sydney, you’re likely here the didge in the background and find Norm who has a real zest for entertaining and calling the tourists over to grab a snap shot. He explained to me that he is not hooked up on a political or cultural vibe, they’re just there to entertain the tourists.
