Martha Maxwell, Wildlife Collector and Taxidermist - Carte de Visite
In looking through my sets I realized that I have not posted as many carte de visites as other types of photographs. I made a quick run though a box of cdvs and scanned several. I will post them over the next few days.
This carte de visite shows Martha Maxwell (1831–1881) a self-educated naturalist and artist with her gun and dog. She was one of the founders of modern taxidermy who opened the Rocky Mountain Museum in Boulder, Colorado to display the specimens she had hunted and mounted. Her work was exhibited at the Centennial Exposition in 1876 in realistic landscapes. I am also posting a stereo card from our collection of Mrs. Maxwell with a display in her museum.
