In the Photographer's Studio - Detail from a Stereo Card
This is half of a stereo card that is marked "E. M. Johnson, Photographer, Crown Point, N.Y.". Mr. Johnson ( I assume he is the photographer pictured) wears a rather bazarre printed coat while he photographs a couple. We are expected to believe he is actually making an exposure since the lens cap is in his hand. I am sure he is too close to the couple to be actually making a photograph. A head rest can be seen as well as movable screen and reflectors.
The wonder of the internet! I Googled E.M. Johnson and found a page offering a booklet of his civil war letters home, A Cavalryman Under Custer '64-'65 Reminiscences of the Civil War Corporal, and some biographical information on him. I now know that he was 20 years old in 1864 when he volunteered for the Union Army. If the photographer pictured is Johnson I would place this photograph in the late 60s or early 70s.
