Katherine of Aragon, 16Cth
A portrait of Katherine of Aragon, Henry VIII’s first wife and mother of Mary I of England. English school; dates to the sixteenth century. At the top of the portrait there is an inscription which reads: KATHERINA UXOR HENRICI VIII (Katherine wife of Henry VIII).
During the reign of Mary I a number of portraits of Katherine of Aragon were produced. They emphasised the legality of her marriage to Henry VIII which opposed Henry’s own actions and opinions regarding the matter and supported Mary’s defence of her parent’s marriage. It is probable that this image was produced sometime during Mary’s reign.
