Katherine of Aragon - c.1530s?

    Newer Older

Portrait of Katherine of Aragon – English school. The date of this portrait is unknown, although recent dendrochronological dating had concluded it is c.1530s. Therefore this may possibly have been painted during Katherine’s lifetime. However it is odd how a portrait of Katherine would have been officially ordered during the divorce years. Perhaps it dates to the mid/late 1520s? It has been argued that the portrait is based on the miniature by Lucas Horenbout. Perhaps this is a posthumous portrait of Katherine based on that miniature. Certainly the portrait is somewhat idealistic as Katherine is presented as quite youthful although comments regarding her looks by the late 1520s had become negative.

I do belive this is how Katherine did look around that era. But then again most of her suffering and miscarriges did worn her out.
