Trejo Garden in Albany, Rear Garden
This garden was featured in Sunset Magazine a few years ago, and I was hoping this photo would be on the cover! It didn't happen quite like that, but the recognition it brought included a 15 minutes of fame television appearance on local channel 5. (Not even my family caught it...) This is the view one gets entering the rear garden from the front of the house, and the patio was intended to act as an additional place for people to hang out during parties, as were the exaggerated lengths of stairs and the free standing seat walls and retaining walls. The deep purple-gray wall wraps around a drop-in jacuzzi to make it fit into the garden without overpowering it, and is sited at the same height to give a direct view along the length of the reflective koi pond in the rear of the shot. This garden was also on a Park Day School Tour the same year it was featured in Sunset Magazine. The garden is about a year old in this photo, showing how succulents and bromeliads can be particularly useful for getting quick effects, yet not overgrowing their bounds.
