On this Day

For the On this Day Pool.

On this day in 1917, Arthur T. Bateman was born in Gardner, Montana (just outside Yellowstone) where he learned first hand about the glories of fly-fishing with grasshoppers for bait, and how nothing tastes better than skillet fried trout plucked fresh from the stream.

His family moved to Seattle while he was still small, and he grew up to become an athlete, artist, attorney, and architect (in his off-hours transforming a small shack into his dream home). He served as a Communications Officer in WWII, and saw the worst of Guadalcanal. And he played a mean swing piano.

I knew him as the best Bompa ever, and I miss him like hell.

He was the father of my father, but I was taller than him by four inches when he was still standing. Later, when he could no longer stand, I took his hand as we listened to Glenn Miller in his hospital room, and I found that his hand and my hand were twins.

They knitted together like a pair of warm mittens.

He would have been 88 today. Happy Birthday, Bompa.
